Case study - GIS learning for dynamic teams

The Challenge

In 2023, the Department of Defence approached Onneer with a common GIS challenge:

  • They needed training for their team but were unsure how to ensure the knowledge could be applied within their business context.
  • They wanted to ensure continuous learning and maintain the required knowledge level across a dynamic staff base.

The Solution

Onneer provided comprehensive learning packages, including full course design documentation, facilitation materials, and post-course evaluations for continuous improvement. We ensured our client could trace learning requirements through activities, facilitate their own courses, and implement mechanisms for self-improvement.

The Result

Onneer’s learning services are based on the ADDIE framework, which systematically understands the client's business, goals, learners, and learning outcomes. We worked closely with the client to identify specific GIS learning outcomes and mapped these to relevant concepts, tools, workflows, and frameworks, building a coherent learning narrative.

The learning package included design documents and facilitation materials, such as instructor and student guides. This ensures the client can continue to deliver and maintain the learning package as needed to stay relevant with evolving software and business needs.

Benefits

  • Tailored learning: Packages designed to meet specific learning outcomes.
  • Engaging content: Interactive and relevant instructional materials ensure participant engagement.
  • Repeatable framework: Comprehensive learning package documentation and materials for ongoing maintenance.
  • Skill development: Focused on building and enhancing relevant GIS skills and knowledge within the team.
  • Ownership and flexibility: Full IP ownership of the learning package, including design and facilitation materials for future adaptability.
